On the Farm

Tor Royal is a working farm of 1700 hectares. At 1400m above sea level we are an upland farm producing beef from a herd of 200 Aberdeen Angus cattle and lamb from a flock of 800 ewes. Farmyard hens provide eggs and bee hives yield delicious honey for the farmhouse and our Bed and Breakfast business.

Farming with Countryside Stewardship Agreements helps us to conserve the flora and fauna of this beautiful moorland area while producing quality food in a sustainable way. As farmers we are the custodians of Tor Royal Bog designated as an area of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) it is one of only two raised bogs in the UK.

Cattle and sheep grazing is managed at Tor Royal to maintain and enhance the species diversity of our grassland and moorland habitat. In the summer some grass fields are cut to make silage or hay which will then be used to feed the livestock through the cold winter months.

Wild Dartmoor ponies are also an integral part of the farm, being used for conservation grazing on the moorland. Ridden ponies are used to help gather livestock from the surrounding moorland with the invaluable help of the working Collie sheepdogs.

Educational Activities on the farm include:

  • The sheep or beef farming calendar, exploring the field to fork journey.
  • Livestock tasks; feeding lambs, weighing sheep.
  • Learning about wool and its many uses
  • Farmyard fun; Collecting eggs and learning how eggs are produced.
  • Field studies; plant safari, bug hunting and soil detectives.
  • Freshwater studies; kick sampling in the historic Devonport leat.

Activities can be curriculum linked. Please contact us to discuss your requirements.
